Product Details

This bandana features the Malayan Tiger Panthera tigris jacksoni in Peninsular Malaysia and southern Thailand. This subspecies is classified as critically endangered in the IUCN Red List. Threats facing the Malayan tiger include the illegal tiger trade, loss of habitat, and loss of prey species. Tigers are heavily poached for their bones and skin. The Malayan tiger population has been estimated at below 150 and continues to decline. Tigers are solitary animals except when they have cubs. Two to four cubs may be born to a healthy tiger every couple of years. Cubs stay close to their mother, growing strong and learning how to hunt, until they are two years of age, when they go their separate way.

Sambar Rusa unicolor (Vulnerable) and Barking Deer or Red Muntjac Muntiacus muntjak are important food sources of the tiger. Due to forest clearance and poaching in many parts of their range, their numbers are also very low. Conserving habitats and protecting these species are key to their survival.

Sharing the same habitat, a pair of Black Hornbills Anthracoceros malayanus (Vulnerable); male is on the right and female on the left. This species is found in the Sunda subregion, from south Thailand into Peninsular Malaysia, Sumatra and Borneo. Most individuals have a prominent white or pale grey superciliary stripe.
Proceeds from the sale of this bandana go to the conservation work of the tiger and hornbill in Peninsular Malaysia and Thailand.
