 The Challenge

For 31 days, from 25 September to 25 October 2020, a group of SWAG supporters will each run and/or walk a total of 100 kilometers to raise US$10,000 to support MYCAT’s tiger conservation projects in Malaysia.

Why 100 Kilometers?

Dr. Kae Kawanishi, general manager of Malaysian Conservation Alliance for Tigers (MYCAT), has a dream for 100 wild Malayan tigers to roam freely in Taman Negara National Park. According to the latest survey, there are fewer than 50 individuals that call the national park home today, even though the area is able to support double the population as well as the prey that is needed. Dr Kae's dream inspired us to commit to running and/or walking 100 kilometers for 100 tigers.

Why 25 September?

Because it’s the 10th anniversary of the CAT Walk program! On 25 September, 2010, MYCAT organized the inaugural CAT Walk, a citizen conservation project that allows members of the public to help protect wild tigers and their habitat by reporting illegal activities and disarming snares and traps. In 10 years, more than 2,000 CAT Walkers have helped remove more than 180 snares in the forest.
  • Why Are We Doing This?

Once a thriving native resident of Singapore and Malaysia, the Malayan tiger’s population has drastically been reduced over the years due to hunting, poaching, and habitat loss. When the last tiger in Singapore was shot in 1930, this iconic wildcat became extinct in our country. In Malaysia, with only fewer than 200 individuals left in the wild, the Malayan tiger is precariously close to extinction.

To reverse the decline, active monitoring of illegal activities in the jungle is desperately needed and this active patrol does not come cheaply: MYCAT needs US$100,000 annually to employ 50 men and women to patrol and restore key tiger habitats in and around the Sungai Yu Ecological Corridor, which lies to the west of Taman Negara National Park.

SWAG raised and donated S$25,000 to MYCAT in 2019 and we have pledged to match the amount in 2020. While COVID-19 has made face-to-face fundraising events impossible, we hope to count on the SWAG100 Challenge to help us meet our goal and do our part in safeguarding a future for the Malayan tiger.
